After a great summer for Mukus Clothing; the alternative clothing label, they are now getting ready for the Christmas rush.

This was the first official year for Mukus Clothing and it has been a great one. The summer was spent doing the festival circuit with great success, while also working on loads of new designs. The range now includes some awsome hoodies and printed t-shirts that have been flying off the shelves quicker than you can say 'thats an awsome hoody'.

Now moving into the Christmas Season, Mukus Clothing has set up a stall at St Nicholas Market every Thursday, where you can buy all their great goodies. So come along. They will also be there on Christmas eve for all those forgotten Christams gifts!

The Interview:

When did you start making jewelry?

I started making silver jewellery about four years ago although I'd been playing with beads since i was a child. First of all I attended an evening class at Barton Hill settlement on a Tuesday evening with Tara Brett. Tara was brilliant and inspired and gave me confidence. I soon became obsessed and set up a workshop at home. I now have a studio that I share with another jeweller at 'In Bristol'.

Is there any particular styles of jewelry you prefer?

I like modern stark pieces. my style is a bit punky and on the edge. Although sometimes I get into girly pearls and large stones.

Has it taken a long time for you to learn how to do all those intricate pieces?

It takes hours and hours to learn some of the techniques. When I first tried to make a hinge for example it took my two days. Sometimes I still can't believe how long things take to make.

When you decide to make a piece, where do you begin? Do you know exactly what you are going to make before you make it?

Sometimes a piece comes from a drawing of nothing in particular. Other times, the best times, are when you get an idea and get inspired. Then I will start to draw what I want the piece to look like. Not accurately, I'm not that precise at drawing, but just to get the idea down on paper. Then I will work out how to construct it, take it all apart in a drawing, write down measurements, thicknesses of the silver, width of a bangle or whatever. Then I write down the order in which it has to be made. There is a lot of engineering in making silver jewellery. If you mess up the process then you may have to start all over again.

Is it difficult to get the resources?

buying silver and gemstones is a lot easier now that the we have the internet. I buy my silver from bullion dealers via the internet. they are brilliant, things usually arrive the next day which is good as once inspired you want to get started.

Why have you chosen to list your items on Zeecreate?

I think that Zeecreate is a great idea. my own website has been under construction for ages now and there is no end in sight. using Zeecreate I don't need a shop of my own and the idea behind it, nothing mass produced, says it all.

Where else can we see your work?

I'm exhibiting at Easton Community Centre for the Easton Arts Trail on weekend of 21st 22nd June.

The best in Bristol this month is in the final year degree shows at UWE, happening throughout June.

Here you will see some of the best of what Bristol has to offer in everything creative. From product design to fine art. These show have it all.

Saskia Holmkvist
Role Control
Sat 12 Apr - Sun 15 Jun, 10am - 6pm (Except Mondays)

What’s the appeal in watching someone faking it?

Saskia Holmkvist's exhibition presents a major new video installation exploring notions of credibility, social strategy, and how we all engage in role-play. In Saskia Holmkvist’s best-known work Interview with Saskia Holmkvist (2005), the artist hired a media relations expert to train her to deliver a short statement about the themes of authenticity in her practice. The video documents Holmkvist rehearsing this statement with apparent sincerity and authority, but in doing so, a neat self-referential moment occurs as the work undermines and questions the authenticity of the situation.

This work in particular connects two of Holmkvist’s main interests which are the focus of this exhibition; the common languages of information such as factual documentary, and PR and marketing strategies, she elucidates on how these can be manipulated as well as actually being a source of manipulation.

The exhibition presents her newly commissioned film productions Role Control and In Character. The works develop on Holmkvist’s research into self-presentation and role-play, taking as their departure point the psychology of meetings, job interviews and interrogations. They emphasize the preparations for such situations, looking at the strategies employed for coaxing, mediating, cross-examining and disclosing information.

Alongside these new commissions, the exhibition will present a selection of existing works, including System (2001) which first brought her to national prominence in her native Sweden. This will be the first solo exhibition of work by Saskia Holmkvist in the UK.

Labaki’s first feature unpicks the complicated love lives of five women who frequent their neighbourhood beauty salon in Beirut. Cast mostly with unprofessional actors, this warm, character-driven tale heralds a new kind of Lebanese cinema celebrating the witty, affectionate and life-affirming in a region suffering from political and religious strife.

Sami Green is an interior designer who has studied sculpture, printmaking, stained glass and textiles. Her work has a strong ethical basis, sourcing recycled and reclaimed materials. She has a great range of products on Zeecreate so take a look...

The Interview......

Where do you create your work?

I have a studio room at home stuffed full of materials and inspiration. I live at the top of a hill near the Black Mountains where my window looks out to the Wye Valley, Malvern Hills and down the garden onto our Landlords farmyard. Here I feel on top of the world and at the centre of all local goings on! I am constantly being distracted by cows, chickens and tractors.

What range of things do you do?

Almost anything you can imagine that has anything to do with fabric and I have probably had a go. Zee Create is currently carrying a special range of handmade one off pieces of fabric and haberdashery inspired jewellery. This is often made with vintage and antique cloth and buttons from my ongoing collection of goodies. There is also a range of ladies bags in funky printed cottons to brighten up summer outfits. As a textile artist I specialise in pieces for the home, I make fabric sculptures, cushions and woven wall hangings for gallery exhibition. Some examples of which will also be found on auction. Alongside my art I indulge myself with various event decor jobs, creating environments to experience at parties, festivals and weddings. Making items such as flags, backdrops, and sculpture for floor and ceiling decoration.

When did you start creating these types of crafts?

I guess in lots of ways making things from fabric has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started off putting my dolls in clothes I had created at 6 or 7, graduating to items for myself in my teens. At Art College in Bristol I made my first ‘Tryphid’ fabric sculpture and wove my first wall hanging for my stairwell at home in Totterdown. Put up my first decorations at parties at home for friends. Since then I have not been able to be happy doing anything else.

What do you gain inspiration from?

This is a hard question as I do so many things... each with its own source. Partly I am inspired by my materials and my challenges, for example if I decide to make some jewellery I look through my box of buttons and beads and find something beautiful to inspire a design. Sometimes I see crafts created by someone else, like fabric beads, using that I develop my own ideas and style. With my art work my inspiration is directly from my environment. What I feel about my surroundings and how it appears to me in terms of colour, shape and line lead me to find form and fabric to express them. I have been developing methods for my hangings and shapes for my sculptures to embody these feelings. I like the challenge of having to think about each project in a new way. With decor jobs I like to start with a theme and develop the essence of what it means to me in an appropriate manner.

What do you like about Zeecreate?

It is a wonderful way for artists to find buyers for their work, taking it directly into the home and cutting out the expense of showing through a gallery or shop. It is possible for anyone to be part of the site whether they are first time makers or experienced artists. It is a launch pad for new ideas and a base for creative people.

Do you have any little hints or tips you might want to share?

If you want to create, do it. Try it again and again and again until it begins to work. If it makes you happy it is the most valuable thing you can do.

Son of Rambow
Cert: 12A
Dir: Garth Jennings 2007 UK 95 mins
Cast: Bill Milner, Zofia Brooks
Screenings from: Fri 04 - Thu 17 Apr

A nostalgic trip back to the 1980s from the team behind The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Son of Rambow is an inventive valentine to an era where, for the first time, young minds had access to technology that allowed them to create their own stories while paying homage to their larger-than-life film heroes. Entranced by a pirated copy of First Blood, Will, a sheltered dreamer, and Lee, the school terror, set out to make the ultimate action prequel. Their innocent ambition leads to a precarious rollercoaster adventure and an unlikely friendship that is pushed to breaking point in the process. This is a truly endearing and hilarious celebration of imagination, childhood and the movies.

Suburbia Revisited
Sat 2 Feb – Sun 30 Mar
10.00am to 6.00pm

Photographer Bill Owens is highly influential for an entire generation of American photographers in the lineage of social documentary. He gained acclaim for his series of black & white photographs entitled Suburbia, documenting the birth of newly-built suburban neighbourhoods in California during the early 70s.
As a newcomer himself to one of these suburban districts, Owens captured images of families, furniture, lawns, street parties and formica, offering an insight into the aspirations for the domestic American dream at the time. Owens’ photo essay is candid and charming in its portrayal of this significant era.

The original Suburbia photographs will be presented alongside the world premiere of Owens' new series, entitled New Suburbia, offering a present-day insight into some of the same locations that he originally documented a generation ago. This will be Owens’ first
solo exhibition in the UK.

6.30pm on Friday 14th to 10pm on Sunday 16th March there is a non-stop programme of art, talks, music, books, and film filling this beautiful Grade 1 listed building.

The journeys that inspire this weekend range from the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the cavernous bowels of the cave-systems under Borneo; from travels with a trumpet to a salt-lashed, redemptive retracing of the Atlantic Slaving Triangle. Stanfords are launching a popular new book of “Unforgettable Walks”, and children are invited to immerse themselves in a shadow puppet workshop and to watch the animated film, “Pilgrimage”. Nine different events are crammed into this busy weekend, which is part of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue.

The Art Exhibition opens at 6.30pm on Friday 14th March, and then runs 11am – 5pm on the Saturday and Sunday.

The Festival takes place at the Pierian Centre, 27 Portland Square, St Pauls, Bristol – a Grade 1 listed Georgian beauty. It runs from Friday 14th March, 6.30pm, to Sunday 16th March, 10pm. The Boss of It All

screenings from:
Fri 29 Feb - Thu 13 March

The iconoclastic von Trier (Dancer in the Dark) takes a surprise turn with this sharp comedy about office life gone haywire. An IT company boss has spent years hiding behind a fictitious president who takes the blame for unpopular decisions. When a tricky takeover means the creation must become a reality, he hires a haughty unemployed actor to play the part, resulting in an hilarious array of tangled situations with the firm’s other employees. Returning to the black comedy of his early film The Idiots, von Trier delivers a witty mix of absurdist humour and moral dilemmas that marks his most approachable film in ages.

Zeecreate is an ethical website. We want artists and craftsmen to be able to sell their work easily and successfully. The aim of the site is to enable artists to make a living from their creative trades by providing an economically viable venue to sell work through. Unlike other websites, we have been set up by people who have been involved in grass roots community arts events for years. We really are doing this, first and foremost, as a facility for you the artist.

There are so many amazing artists in Bristol and the rest of the UK. Very few of these artists make it into the big time. We want to showcase the massive cross section of great British arts and craftmanship.

You are a new site…why should we put our work online now?

This year we will be launching into a massive advertising campaign to promote the site. This will include a large amount of press coverage to pull people into buying your work. Before we can begin this promotion to buyers we need as many items on the site as possible. This means we need you, the artist!

To help people put their work online it is currently completely free to list items and create your own online store. The fee, once you have sold an item, is only 3.4 - 5% of the final price the item has sold at. This offer is for a limited time only. By just charging commission on the things that you actually sell, we only make money if you do. This means that we really are out their trying to sell your work.

Register today and list your items for FREE...
To read more about how we promote your work, please click here.

Zeecreate has been developed because so many artists and craftsmen spend so much of their time trying to promote and sell their work that they have little time to actually be creative. We want to create a facility that does all the annoying things for you…

  • We list your items on Google. At present we manually upload your products onto Google base, so that we can make sure your products come up when you search for that item. In time this will be done automatically.
  • We spend a considerable amount of money with Google advertising, so that the site is at the top of the most relevant search terms.
  • We also spend a considerable amount of time and money on flyers and other advertising outside of the internet. This showcases work being sold on the site.
  • For those in the know, we partake in considerable SEO and PPC (basically we make sure you can find our site on the web).

After Easter we will be starting a massive marketing campaign to promote your work. This is why we advise all products to be put online before this time, so that they can be viewed when the site is launched to the public. This promotion will include:

  • Press releases to all magazines and newspapers.
  • Bristol arts market for Zeecreate users to come and sell their work.

Zeecreate re-development plans

We are currently deciding on all the improvements that need to be done to the site over the next few months and we want your opininion. Improvements that are currently underway are….

•Making the process of listing an item a lot simpler and quicker.

•Making the members area simpler and more self explanatory

Please contact us if there is anything you would like improved on the site as it is being built for you as a Zeecreate user!

For more information on any subject, or to give us feedback about anything here, please email us by using the contact page.

We love to here your thoughts and views!

We spend a lot of time making sure that your products show up when somebody searches through Google. Here are some tips and tricks to help you along your way and boost your sales…

1) The title of your listing is very important – When somebody searches Google or Zeecreate, they will be searching your item’s title. It is then very important to make this title as relevant as possible

2) Search Terms - Think about what somebody might search for if they wanted to buy your item. Make sure the title of your item is related to these search terms.

For example this Tu Tu comes up in Google if you type in the words ‘tu tu party skirt’ as this:
party skirt/tu tu (Auction ID: 100211, End Time : Feb. 16, 2008 18 ...
Find party skirt/tu tu in the Clothing & Accessories - Girls category on Zeecreate.
www.zeecreate.com/party-skirttu-tu,name,100211,auction_id,auction_details - 34k –

If it is a painting don’t be tempted to use the title of the painting as the auction title. Make sure you use the word ‘painting’ and try and make the auction title as descriptive as possible.

3) Use metatags in your webstore – Metatags are keywords that tell Google about the content of that page. To decide what metatags to put in your webstore think about what search terms you would like google to pick up. So for a shop selling tutus I would put in the keywords

“ tu tu, tu-tu, tutu, party skirt, girls skirts,”

Make sure your metatags are mirrored in the wording you use in the text within your store. So in my webstore I would make sure I talked about tutus in my store description and my ‘about this store’ page.

To change your store metatags go to ‘My Store’ in the member’s area and click on ‘main settings’. Here you will have the option of entering in your metatags.

This is for anybody who would like to sell their work on Zeecreate. You may already be a member but want to put better photos online, or you may want to start selling but not know where to start.

The site will have a grand launch after Easter with a lot of publicity. To increase the chance of selling your work, it should be ready and online before this day and so we would like to help you in any way we can.

The Agenda

Location: Bristol, UK (email us for more details)

Saturday:

All day product photo shoot with a professional photographer (see his work at www.sidzphotography.co.uk) Come along with your work.

Sunday:

We will upload these images onto the site for you and help you develop a professional looking online shop to enable you to start selling your work. This will include a guided tour of the site and any advice you need.

Please email us as soon as you can if you would like to come along as we will only have limited spaces. We are flexible with the hours so please let us know what time of the day you would like to come and see us and we will try to accommodate.

We had a really productive meeting, thank you to everybody who came.

If you were unable to make it then please email me any queries or ideas that you have because we will be happy to have your feedback.

Summary of issues brought up at the meeting:

  • General simplification of the site to make it more user friendly. We will be working on developing the site so that it is more accessible to people who have limited computer knowledge.
  • Development of the FAQ section.
  • We need to work on a way for users to send feedback about how to improve the site.
  • Having 'buy now' as the default setting when selling an item, but still having the option for an auction if necessary.
Events:

  • Grand launch to promote the artists on the site. A place to showcase all of Bristol's creative talent.
  • Involve other Bristol arts groups and trails.
  • Gain media attention for the artists and the site.
  • Fundraising events in connection with Bristol Festival.
  • A day where members can come along, have their items photographed and then uploaded for free and advised on how best to market their products on the site
If you are interested in attending the next meeting, or any of the events, please contact us and get involved!

Every month we pick one Zeecreate member to feature on our home page. This artist will show a portfolio of high quality work which is being sold on the site. We then do a short interview of the artist to get an idea of what they are all about. If you would like to appear as the next Zeecreate featured artist then just email us with images and descriptions of your work or alternatively, you can email us your Zeecreate store name and we will have look. Which ever way you apply, we will cosider the work that is submitted to us and let you know if you have been the successful candidate.

We look forward to hearing from you, and good luck!
