The Interview:
When did you start making jewelry?
I started making silver jewellery
about four years ago although I'd been playing with beads since i was a
child. First of all I attended an evening class at Barton Hill
settlement on a Tuesday evening with Tara Brett. Tara was brilliant
and inspired and gave me confidence. I soon became obsessed and set up
a workshop at home. I now have a studio that I share with another
jeweller at 'In Bristol'.
Is there any particular styles of jewelry you prefer?
I
like modern stark pieces. my style is a bit punky and on the edge.
Although sometimes I get into girly pearls and large stones.
Has it taken a long time for you to learn how to do all those intricate pieces?
It
takes hours and hours to learn some of the techniques. When I
first tried to make a hinge for example it took my two days. Sometimes I still can't believe how long things take to make.
When you decide to make a piece, where do you begin? Do you know exactly what you are going to make before you make it?
Sometimes
a piece comes from a drawing of nothing in particular. Other times,
the best times, are when you get an idea and get inspired. Then I will
start to draw what I want the piece to look like. Not accurately, I'm
not that precise at drawing, but just to get the idea down on paper. Then I will work out how to construct it, take it all apart in a
drawing, write down measurements, thicknesses of the silver, width of a
bangle or whatever. Then I write down the order in which it has to be
made. There is a lot of engineering in making silver jewellery. If
you mess up the process then you may have to start all over again.
Is it difficult to get the resources?
buying
silver and gemstones is a lot easier now that the we have the internet.
I buy my silver from bullion dealers via the internet. they are
brilliant, things usually arrive the next day which is good as once
inspired you want to get started.
Why have you chosen to list your items on Zeecreate?
I think that Zeecreate is a great idea. my own website has been under
construction for ages now and there is no end in sight. using
Zeecreate I don't need a shop of my own and the idea behind it, nothing
mass produced, says it all.
Where else can we see your work?
I'm exhibiting at Easton Community
Centre for the Easton Arts Trail on weekend of 21st 22nd June.
