Suburbia Revisited
Sat 2 Feb – Sun 30 Mar
10.00am to 6.00pm
FREE
Photographer Bill Owens is highly
influential for an entire generation of American photographers in the lineage
of social documentary. He gained acclaim for his series of black & white
photographs entitled Suburbia, documenting the birth of newly-built suburban
neighbourhoods in California during the early 70s.
As a newcomer himself to one of these suburban districts, Owens captured images
of families, furniture, lawns, street parties and formica, offering an insight
into the aspirations for the domestic American dream at the time. Owens’ photo
essay is candid and charming in its portrayal of this significant era.
The original Suburbia photographs will be presented alongside the world
premiere of Owens' new series, entitled New Suburbia, offering a present-day
insight into some of the same locations that he originally documented a
generation ago. This will be Owens’ first solo exhibition in the UK.

Semiconductor's stunning new sound and
video installation investigates our perception of the natural world. During a
five-month fellowship at NASA’s Space Sciences Laboratory, Ruth Jarman and Joe
Gerhardt explored the techniques, materials and philosophies used by scientists
to discover near-space. This new work reveals worlds beyond our sensory
awareness which probe the limits of human understanding and experience
including images of the sun and visual representations of magnetic fields.
This live installation is accompanied by a performance on Fri 4 April. Link here

Ghost Road by Luci Gorell Barnes
The restless energy of Spring is captured in Journeys - an Art Exhibition and
weekend Festival of free events at the Pierian Centre. From 6.30pm on Friday 14th to 10pm on Sunday 16th March there
is a non-stop programme of art, talks, music, books, and film filling this
beautiful Grade 1 listed building.
The journeys that inspire this weekend
range from the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the cavernous bowels of the cave-systems under Borneo; from travels with a
trumpet to a salt-lashed, redemptive retracing of the Atlantic Slaving
Triangle. Stanfords are launching a popular new book of “Unforgettable Walks”,
and children are invited to immerse themselves in a shadow puppet workshop and
to watch the animated film, “Pilgrimage”. Nine different events are crammed
into this busy weekend, which is part of the European Year of Intercultural
Dialogue.
The Art Exhibition opens at 6.30pm on Friday 14th March, and then runs 11am – 5pm on the
Saturday and Sunday.
The Festival takes place at the Pierian
Centre, 27 Portland Square, St Pauls, Bristol – a Grade 1 listed Georgian beauty. It runs from Friday 14th March,
6.30pm, to Sunday 16th March, 10pm. All events are free – but
booking is advisable, especially for Jonathan’s Shadow Puppet workshop on the
Saturday morning. For bookings and information contact 0117 924 4512 or

The Boss of It All
screenings from:
Fri 29 Feb - Thu 13 March
The iconoclastic von Trier (Dancer in the
Dark) takes a surprise turn with this sharp comedy about office life gone
haywire. An IT company boss has spent years hiding behind a fictitious
president who takes the blame for unpopular decisions. When a tricky takeover
means the creation must become a reality, he hires a haughty unemployed actor
to play the part, resulting in an hilarious array of tangled situations with
the firm’s other employees. Returning to the black comedy of his early film The
Idiots, von Trier delivers a witty mix of absurdist humour and moral dilemmas
that marks his most approachable film in ages.
